You Don't Lack Time Management Skills - You Need To Work On Your Vision

If you get excited at the idea of mastering time management to develop great working routines, stick with them and get more productive in less time, then this post is for you.

If you think you can achieve such a proficiency by only downloading an app or following some tips, then I am sorry to disappoint you because this post won't be for you.

I am gong to talk about time management, how you can look at it differently, its impact on your life and how to master it. Bear in mind that time management is a soft skill and, as for all the other soft skills, it will emerge after you first take care of some important aspects of your life. Think about time management as a huge puzzle that you can't look at unless you climb on a tall ladder. Only after you put all the pieces together, the whole image will emerge when you will look at it from above.

What time management is and how to interpret it

"Time management is the process of planning and exercising conscious control of time spent on specific activities, especially to increase effectiveness, efficiency, and productivity. It involves a juggling act of various demands upon a person relating to work, social life, family, hobbies, personal interests and commitments with the finiteness of time" as Wikipedia explains. Did you notice some key words like conscious, control, time and juggling? It seems that the concept of time management is more of an art and you should have some sort of talent to be able to juggle with the various demands you are constantly exposed to. If you don't have that talent, then you are doomed!

Don't worry. Talent is not needed and you can learn how to invest your resources wisely. Time management is an act of generosity towards yourself and others. Whenever you consciously choose how to spend your valuable time, you are automatically exercising gratitude towards the most precious resource you have. Being grateful for the time you have at your disposal makes prioritizing easy. And once you know what your priorities are, then you are managing your time, and consequently your whole life, effectively. This implies that you will increase your sense of fulfillment creating a loving environment for you and the people you get in touch with.

Expressing sincere gratitude towards time seems fairly simple and obvious, but staying focused and making conscious choices all the time is hard. In order to improve awareness you need a drive. A powerful one.

Where to find the powerful drive

A client of mine gave me a clear metaphor of what life is for him: a road that he is able to build one cobblestone at a time. I think that it's an amazing metaphor for life. During our sessions, it got more and more clear where his road was headed. After he could see where the destination was, developing a strategy came natural.

That's exactly the approach you need to have with respect to time management. You need to build a vision for your life. Once you know where your own road is headed, the final destination will act as a beacon giving meaning to the choices you make. You don't want to waste resources in polishing every single cobblestone, taking a picture of it and posting it on Instagram. It will drain you preventing you from fulfilling your vision as soon and as gratifying as possible.

You will definitely find some obstacles along the way and you will need to deal with them. But as long as you have a vision, you know how to avoid those obstacles to get back on track. You want to get to the point where every step you make brings you closer to your goal.

How can I understand my vision?

Understanding your vision is a process. It can take some weeks if done alone or few hours with my help. If you want to give it a try, ask yourself two main questions:

1. Who do I want to be?

2. How do I want to be remembered?

Try to answer with a kind heart and an open mind. Try to get rid of prejudices and limiting beliefs. If you decide to embark in this journey alone, ask these questions over and over. You will discover that each time you answer, you come up with a refined and extended version of the previous answers. Continue until the vision becomes clear and it feels good to you. Until it fits you and whoever you want to become.

If you want to accelerate the process of discovering and creating your vision to be more productive and live your life fully, I can help. Reach out to me, I will be happy to understand your situation and explore ways I can support and guide you in your journey.
